Repositioning a Pioneer, Vonage’s Cloud Transformation
Overview
Vonage, a global cloud communications leader, helps businesses accelerate their digital transformation, providing a comprehensive set of engagement solutions to deliver richer, more personal and meaningful communications across the entire customer and employee experience.
Vonage’s Unified Communications as a Service (UCaaS) and Contact Center as a Service (CCaaS) solutions enable companies to transform how they communicate and operate from the office or anywhere. Vonage’s Communications Platform as a Service (CPaaS) offering is fully programmable and allows developers to embed video, voice, chat, messaging, AI and verification into existing products, workflows and systems using communications APIs. Leveraging the power of the network, Vonage’s CPaaS is expanding to incorporate new network capabilities exposed as APIs to help developers worldwide pioneer new, advanced applications that help enterprises reimagine their business, transform their operations and improve customer experiences.
Vonage is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC), and a business area within the Ericsson Group called Business Area Global Communications Platform.
Challenge
Vonage, a pioneer and longtime leader in the Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) market, built its reputation by transforming traditional telephony. However, as the VoIP space became commoditized and stagnant — viewed as outdated and uninspired — new players like Twilio began to redefine the industry. With flexible, API-driven cloud communications platforms, these newcomers empowered developers to integrate voice, messaging and other communication tools directly into their applications. To stay competitive and move beyond its legacy perception, Vonage recognized the need to evolve. The acquisition of Nexmo, a rapidly growing Communications Platform as a Service (CPaaS) provider, was a pivotal move, enabling Vonage to reposition itself as a modern, developer-focused cloud communications platform ready to compete in a new era of business communications. BOCA, Nexmo’s agency of record, played a key role in this journey. Impressed by BOCA’s strategic partnership and white-glove service, Vonage retained BOCA as its communications agency of record following the acquisition.
Results
Over the course of a five-year partnership, BOCA played a central role in shaping and executing Vonage’s comprehensive communications strategy. From brand positioning and messaging to media relations, thought leadership, and product PR, BOCA helped elevate Vonage’s profile as a modern, API-led communications platform. As a result, Vonage successfully repositioned itself in the market, transitioning from a legacy VoIP provider to a recognized leader in the cloud communications space. BOCA’s efforts drove consistent media coverage in top-tier business and tech publications, increased executive visibility, and strengthened Vonage’s credibility among developers and enterprise customers alike. The collaboration not only reinforced Vonage’s competitive stance against emerging players like Twilio, but also supported the company’s broader growth and innovation goals during a critical phase of transformation.
